Typically, the data migration process is not carried out on the production system first. It is important to carry it out on a test system and repeatedly revise the business rules until all the data has been migrated completely and accurately. Depending upon the complexity of data migration, this process may take anywhere from weeks to months.

After the migration results in the test environment are satisfactory, together the team decides a cut-off date for actual data migration. At the cut-off date, the migration is performed on the production system.
